Global Fat Bike Day

So, tomorrow is Global Fat Bike Day.  I must say I am wicked excited about this new holiday.  However, I have been monitoring the weather all week and have been less than thrilled with these forecasters.  Wanted to post a local ride here to celebrate, but have been dragging my feet hoping for a change from the heavens.

Oh, what is Global Fat Bike Day...
"December 1st has been declared – GLOBAL FAT-BIKE DAY! That means fat-bikers from all over the globe are invited to get out for a ride on their fat-bikes! Go for a solo cruise or make plans to gather your fat-bike tribe for a group ride! Don’t forget your camera, because part of the Global Fat-Bike Celebration will include sharing your experience, through photos and video, with the rest of the world!" -- courtesy of our Fat Bike friends at fat-bike.com

Anyways, I say to hell with all the rain, doom and gloom...I'm riding!  Look for me climbing Schweitzer in hopes of finding the sweet point at which rain gives way to white fluffy stuff...

Fat Biking on Thanksgiving

What better way to prep for a little stuff your face day than a fat bike ride.  That and my brother was back in town for the holiday and wanted to try the bikes out.  Freshies have been hitting Schweitzer all week, so it was the obvious choice.

Our trail started out ungroomed and had about 18" of all that light fresh goodness on it.  With no pack or base it was shit ton of work as we made our way to the utility intersection.

I could be sitting at home drinking beer...
Once at the intersection, the snow and hence our attitudes greatly improved.  Nice soft groomed trail=smiles.

Ride with Lake City Flyers

What to do on a cool, wet Fall day?  How about ride bikes, sample brews and make some new friends?  On location in CDA with Lake City Flyers.  This little group meets once a month to do a little cruiser ride.  As I remember, it went a little something like this...

Meet at Capone's where we had a few barley pops, chatted about bikes and I caught a bit of the game on one of the many TVs.  As a side, if you have never been to Capone's, there is not a bad seat in the house and if you like trying beers...well their slogan is "More Taps than Tables."  Now that is a ratio I like.

Once we were properly fueled and gotten through the meet and greet, we piled out on to the street to admire each others bikes.  Warning, you may encounter some "bike nerds" on these rides.  Once we had goggled over bikes, we cruised an easy 25 minutes to our destination...

O'Shays, a cool little Irish Pub.  Here we parked bikes and went inside for some Guinness, Harp and homemade cabbage soup to warm all the right parts.
always!!

No matter your bike, you might wanna make a point to go ride with these guys and see the inside of some new drinking establishments, some new faces and perhaps some different looking bikes.

The nights are meant for riding

More night riding at Syringa...and more burning.  These nights are awesome for riding.  Temps are cool and tread is amazing with all the leaves and needles.

Does it look like this rock is slick?  No, it doesn't.  But it sure as hell is!

it's like it's in a little cocoon and something beautiful is about to happen

Burning in Syringa

If you've been in Syringa lately, you might have noticed some brush piles burning.  No need to be alarmed.  However, when riding at night, your senses can be heightened...or something like that.  And hence, sights and sounds can be different than what they might be like in the daylight.

Case in point, riding up on the fires before seeing actually flames or coals I had no idea there was burning going on.  The night was dead quiet and then I started to hear a lot of cracking and popping in the woods and my thoughts jumped to some hungry animals waiting for me up the trail.  As I prepared for animal battle, I was disappointed to learn it was just burning brush piles making all that noise.  Got the blood going.

Another play on the senses occurred when I rode by the "one legged statue" that I have seen many times before.  At night this silhouette takes on a whole new look...creepy.

Luckily I had Shadow and found some barley pops to sooth the nerves.  Fun ride!

Lakeview Mountain Trail

Ahh, Fall has been sooo good to us.  There have been a lot of good riding days, sometimes you gotta be ready to go in between storms.  Kinda like this ride.  Nonetheless, it's November and we still get to ride.  On tap was Lakeview Mountain.  This is a great trail with a short, steep climb and then a really fun descent back to lakeside.

A couple of blow downs to cross, but it was obvious that someone had done a lot of cutting earlier in the year.  The trail itself was like a "golden" highway with all the needles and leaves.  Nice looking, but take it easy as it can all be a little slick...trust me I know first hand.

Oh, and did I mention lots of fog??  Awesome Fall ride!

2012 Veteran's Day Ride

Veteran's Day is Sunday, let's go for a cruiser ride!!

Who:  Anyone with a bike
What:  Thought I covered this...ride bikes (drink barley grenades)
Where:  Meet at Greasy Fingers Bikes N Repair
When: Nov 11th @ 6pm
Why: (1) cause we are FREE and can, (2) pay a little homage to those that have served

We'll meet, cruise the Sagle Bike Path to the end (that's 14 miles RT so start training now if need be) and end at MickDuff's to refuel and tell wars stories once back in town.  For those of you needing some pre-ride tips, bring some lights and a helmet as there may be insurgence.

See you there!

Syringa Night Ride

Night riding is awesome right now!  Well, with the daylight hours the way they are, it is sometimes the only way to get a ride in during the Fall.  But whatever, it gets me excited to still suit up and go out in the cold/wet to ride.

Also, I experimented with taking some night shots, you will notice very limited success.  Part of the problem is my model, Shadow, is black and doesn't show up in the pics very well.  About all you can see are her eyes and red blinky light.  I'll continue to work at it...

what the hell is that??
